Customers embracing SOA (service-oriented architecture) can get a breath of fresh air when it comes to ecosystem management courtesy of Microsoft and Pluralsight. The two companies are offering “An Introduction to Service Virtualization on the Microsoft NET Platform,” a whitepaper that is already available for download via the Microsoft Download Center. William Oellermann, the technology director for the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) Solutions Team in Microsoft Consulting Services, recommended the resource to all customers that needed an insight into service virtualization on the .NET platform.

“We published a technical whitepaper on Microsoft downloads that discusses in some detail how we enable service virtualization on the .NET platform through the Managed Services Engine (MSE),” Oellermann stated. “Aaron Skonnard of Pluralsight authored this document and does a great job in not only going through specific activities such as versioning a service and defining new policies, but also the application of these activities in virtualizing services through the .NET Service Bus. This is a very thorough document on the MSE, so if you are looking for a detailed understanding of our approach to service virtualization I strongly suggest you look it over.”

Via the whitepaper, customers will be able to not only understand the concept of service virtualization but also become familiar with the Managed Services Engine (MSE), the service virtualization solution created on the .NET platform. Leveraging the Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), the Managed Services Engine is designed on top of Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2008, and .NET Framework 3.5.

“Service virtualization is an emerging trend in the SOA landscape that focuses on providing a common infrastructure for building and managing a complex service ecosystem,” Skonnard noted. “Managing large SOA ecosystems as they grow over time is inherently complex and typically requires sophisticated management infrastructure to deal with effectively. Service virtualization is an emerging approach for managing growing service ecosystems through a service intermediary pattern that’s driven by a centralized repository and runtime.”
