While Venus Williams had to pull out of this week's Los Angeles Open due to injury problems, her sister is eager than ever to win WTA titles. After having to sit most of the season off the tennis court, the former World No 1 is now fully fit and will try to make the most of her US Open preparations.
Serena pulled out from both Rolland Garros and Wimbledon Grand Slams because of her knee injury and returned into the WTA Tour on the 110th position. It was the main reason why the US Open organizers awarded her with a wild card. Therefore, she will have
to meet some really tough competitors starting the first round.
Still, that doesn't trouble her for the moment. Her current goal is to reach her best form before entering the Flushing Meadows tournament. "It's been awfully weird this year, not being able to play most of the year and especially missing out on two grand slams. That was very difficult for me. But I've been training for the last few months and I look forward to getting more matches in and playing out the rest of the year", admitted Serena about her horrible year so far.
The American joked on her current position inside the WTA race and set her new goal for the end of the season. "But my first goal is to get back into the top 100, and that would be really exciting. Once I get there, I can really move forward in the rankings. Everyone says I've achieved so much but there so much more that I'd like to achieve, that I'd like to get to do. Most of all, I would like to take more titles. I love to compete and that's something I knew I wanted to get back to", said Williams.
Her main concern is to get as much as she can in the Californian tournament and avoid future injuries: "I'm really confident or I wouldn't be out here. I don't foresee any problems with my getting back to the top at all".
The 24-year old tennis player will meet Maria Kirilenko of Russia in Los Angeles Open's first round, on Tuesday.
