The aim of the new Sensear technology (created by an Australian-based company) is to combine hearing protection with the possibility to communicate clearly. The technique that makes it reach its goal is the way it manages to separate the ambient noise from speech itself.
The Sensear is designed especially for people who work in places with damaging ambient noise levels (like bars or pubs). Here's how it works. First, the directional microphones collect all kinds of sounds from the environment for processing. Then, a frequency algorithm decides what part of the recorded noise is speech and what is pure ambient noise. When speech is detected, the device suppresses the ambient noise and amplifies the speaker's voice.
And there are still good parts to come. The Sensear system features a built-in Bluetooth that allows workers to answer the phone without taking their earmuffs off.
