Sleep – we spend almost one-third of our lives in this state, and while scientists are trying to discover why mammals need it, we wouldn't be ourselves throughout the day without getting a few hours in wonderland.

And the new Sense sleep monitor aims to help you get the necessary hours of rest you require.

Doctors and mothers alike prescribe a few hours of hefty sleep as a cure for a lot of problems and the gadget we’re going to be talking about has been designed to help you create the perfect atmosphere and balance in the room you’re going to be saying good night in.

The Sense is a pretty stylish sleep monitor that to our eyes actually looks like a decorative piece of art. Its creator, former Thiel fellow, James Proud says he wanted to create something that didn't feel like a piece of electronics (reference to the Apple TV), but something which inspired calm and appeal overall to the aesthetic sense found in each human being.

Taking design cues from his two favorite things, the Sense looks like a spherical Nexus Q meets a 2008 Beijing Olympics-reminiscent geometric pattern.

The beautiful sleep tracking device is capable of measuring temperature, humidity and ambient light so you know when it’s the perfect time to go to bed. Sense has been set up on Kickstarter seeking funds, with early pledges starting at $129 / €96. But in a few hours the project managed to get its funding goal surpassed three times.

The Sense bundle is made up of the lovely device we have discussed so far plus the Sleep Pill, which is a sensor that needs to be clipped to your pillow. All the information gathered using these gadgets is then relayed to the mobile app which will tell how well you slept each night.

Sense incorporates a speaker, so you can even play calming ambient sounds like rain or sea, if that helps you drift off into the land of dream.

Furthermore, the Sense is capable of identifying when is the right time for you to be woken up so you can feel the most alert and refreshed.

Here’s how the system works. Once you begin to naturally stir in your sleeping position, the Sense picks up this cue as an incentive to start the alarm. Stirring indicates that your body is ready to wake up and the alarm can be stopped once you wave your hand over the Sense.

For the time being, the Sense will be available in two beautiful colors, cotton and charcoal. The Sense will also light up when you hoover your hand above the device if case you want to get some feedback about your environment.

Maybe it’s time you start sleeping better.
