The year 2006 has certainly been one of the strangest and most interesting ones in terms of referees. Some of the decisions made by the football "whistlers" for the past 3 months have been truly amazing. After Graham Poll awarded 3 yellow cards in one match to a Croatia player during the World Cup and a Brazilian referee awarded a goal scored by a ball-boy, and finally, another new amazing episode took place in Spain's second division.

According to Marca and Gazzetta Dello Sport, the match between
Almeria and Cadiz registered another "first" inside the world of football. Manuel Rodriguez Vallejo, Iglesias Villanueva's linesman, awarded a penalty kick with no footballers in the penalty area but the goalkeeper.

Let's take a look at the whole picture! The home side was winless after the first rounds in Spain's second league and badly needed a victory. So the home side began the match perfectly, with Michel getting the opener for Almeria after only 6 minutes of play.

They doubled the score in the second half, 7 minutes after halftime. The goal scorer: Corona. The 3 points were almost there and the home fans started celebrating. But the party didn't last for too long. In the 60th minute, Almeria's Mane fouled Cadiz' Enrique 3 meters outside the penalty area.

The linesman called Vallejo to discuss the incident and, after a few seconds, the referee went on and pointed out to the penalty box. Incredible! Although Vallejo had perfect visibility on the incident, Cadiz was given a penalty kick and the home side went mad. Still, they had nothing to do but hope the result would stay the same. Moreover, Villanueva gave Mane a red card and Almeria had to play 30 minutes in 10 men.

Abraham Paz took the responsibility of shooting the penalty kick and beat Westerveld. Fortunately for the home side, Cadiz failed to get the equalizer by the end of the 90 minutes, despite playing 11 versus 10. The Spanish refereeing body is still to make a statement concerning the incident.
