Later this week

Steam is feeling generous this time of the year and plans to enable some new features in their browsers. If you have a friend who has a Steam account, it is time to butter up to him, because he will soon be able to send you free trial games of certain Steam games that he owns.

This new option is called Guest Pass and will appear in the options menu later this week, according to a Steam News update. This feature will run in beta mode for a short period and if all goes well maybe they will make it a permanent feature. I certainly hope so. It is nice to be able to try out a game before you decide to purchase it.

During the beta period, the new items menu will appear of all Steam accounts, but it will be available only for certain Steam games (which are the games in question has not been revealed yet). After this closed beta ends, Valve will extend the Steam Guest Pass to those who own Day of Defeat: Source.

Given the amount of the games available on Steam, maybe Valve should reconsider and extend this option to all of their games. A free Call of Duty trial would be nice, and a Dark Messiah of Might and Magic demo would be nice too. This new feature is similar to the Free Weekends option, which was available on Steam quite some time ago.

I guess it's time for Valve to make up to the users somehow for the recent bad news, that they are planning to implement advertisements to Counter-Strike 1.6. Maybe you don't care about this if you don't play CS1.6, but I am certain that they will implement this in more of their games, if CS 1.6 turns out ok.
