Dianne Feinstein calls for president Obama to take immediate action

“The threats to our national and economic security are simply too great to wait for legislation,” Senator Dianne Feinstein wrote in a letter to US President Barack Obama.

Feinstein, who is also Chairwoman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, has attempted on numerous occasions to convince the White House, senators and civil liberty groups of the importance of the need for cybersecurity legislation such as the Cybersecurity Act of 2012, GovInfoSecurity notes.

Since it’s unlikely that this year any such laws will be adopted, the senator calls out to the president, hoping to convince him to issue an executive order.

“Your administration can issue cybersecurity standards and provide technical assistance to companies willing to take voluntary steps to improve their security,” she wrote.

“You can also direct the intelligence community and the Department of Homeland Security to provide as much information as possible to the private sector about cyberthreats, including classified information.”

While she is aware that the actions of the president wouldn’t be as effective as a full-fledged law, Feinstein is confident that they could make a difference.
