The MTV pseudo-reality TV series "The Hills" debuted its not-so-eagerly-awaited third season yesterday. However, the media had been alive with... well, not the sound of music but definitely with the sound of speculation, regarding both the allegedly not scripted plot and storyline in general. "The Hills" is one of those shows on which we can expect critics to write just about anything and adopt any kind of attitude – from praise to moderate criticism to downright "total annihilation".
However, the last thing anyone reading up on the reality show's upcoming season would expect is glowing praise for the show's resident bad girl, the shamelessly fame-whoring Heidi Montag. However, that's just what Ginia Bellafante of the New York Times has done when she made her bizarre "Heidi as a kind of feminist hero" comment.
The fact is, the last thing Heidi Montag needs is praise and encouragement – however volatile and tongue-in-cheek they may be. She has grabbed onto her illusory fame with both hands and done unspeakably humiliating compromises for the sake of keeping herself in the spotlight – something that Bellafante is quick to acknowledge and just as quick to dismiss. "The full-on joyous Oprah-fication of Heidi culminates with the show’s return and gives "The Hills" a new momentum. After taking a break from Spencer at her parents’ modest house in Crested Butte, Colo., Heidi returns to Los Angeles to kick him out and chastises him for taking her flat-screen TV with him. How proud Gloria Allred would be. And oh, what Lauren, her vulnerability hidden beneath her baroque moralism, could learn from Heidi right now", the columnist remarks.
What this will do is give Heidi's "get famous at all costs" philosophy a boost – and prompt her to be willing to kill the little that's left of her dignity for the sake of keeping herself in the world of the rich and famous. She already released her first single (complete with a home-made, disastrous video) and despite receiving overwhelming bad reviews, proceeded to borrow one of Britney Spears' leftover tracks and quickly superimposed her voice next to Britney's thus creating a fake "duo". One can only wonder what will come next. In the light of the glowing praise she just got from the New York Times, the answer could be "more shameless fame-whoring". For the moment, we can only speculate.
