Researchers now working on creating a type of concrete that can mend itself

I can only assume that everybody hates having to drive their cars or ride their bicycles over streets and sidewalks sporting a tad too many cracks.

A team of researchers wish to put an end to such problems once and for all by rolling out a new type of concrete: one that can heal itself.

The material these scientists are trying to create will be able to mend itself with the help of bacteria-containing microcapsules embedded in it.

Inhabitat explains that, whenever water makes its way into a crack in either the sidewalk or the street, the bacteria would germinate and start producing limestone.

The scientists working on this project expect that whatever paving and structures are built using this self-healing concrete will no longer need manual repairs.

What's more, they would stick around for longer periods than those built using the concrete types currently available on the market.

Presently, the researchers are trying to figure out which bacteria species would prove most efficient when used to make self-healing concrete.
