Lorde may be only 16 but being so outspoken is already getting her in some trouble with her fellow pop stars. Having recently pointed to Selena Gomez’s “Come and Get It” as the most un-feminist song she’s heard in a while, Lorde is now accused by Selena herself for not supporting other women.

For context, here’s what Lorde says in one of her most recent interviews: “I’m a feminist, and the theme of her song is, ‘When you’re ready come and get it from me.’ I’m sick of women being portrayed this way.”

Selena sat down for an interview with Flaunt magazine and, in between talking about her mistakes, her career, her 10-year plan and growing up in the spotlight, she also said Lorde was only posing as a feminist because she wasn’t one.

“That’s not feminism. [Lorde is] not supporting other women. That’s my honest opinion, that’s what I would say to her if I saw her. I actually covered her song in all of my shows that I’ve done so far. I’m not sure if I’m going to continue that,” Selena says in the interview.

While it’s her right to decide whether she will continue to cover Lorde’s music in concerts or not, Selena does seem to live with the impression that feminism automatically excludes the possibility of being critical of other women’s work, regardless of quality.

We could also get here into a discussion that “Come and Get It” has zero input from Selena (other than the fact that she’s singing it, I mean), which technically means it’s not entirely her work to take this much offense.

The fact that she doesn’t even deny the obvious, namely that the message of the song is “When you’re ready come and get it from me,” makes that wholly unnecessary. Selena knows her song is not feminist but she expected Lorde to support it nonetheless.
