With Selena Gomez’s first public appearance this year, people noticed that she seemed to be carrying a few extra pounds. On a regular woman or man, that would have been chalked up to a little Holiday weight, but on Selena, it quickly turned into a discussion on whether she was “fat” or not.

The former Disney star is now on a break from work (she’s shooting for a movie called “In Dubious Battle”), and she went to Mexico for a little R&R with a group of friends. This also included some time at the beach, where, naturally, a bikini was in order.

Paparazzi photos snapped on the occasion are now all over the Internet, and many commenters are still saying that Selena is “fat.”

Selena is “fat,” apparently

In the first round of photos, Selena wore a 2-piece pink bikini - the pics are easily available online, we won’t post them here. Again, this was a piece that any other woman would have worn at the beach, if she wanted to work on her tan as well.

Selena was probably not thinking that she’d have a camera trained on her at all times, let alone that her photos, taken from a distance and without her knowledge, would cause such a furor online. But that they did: from celebrity bloggers to celebrity online rags, and the casual commenters, many weighed in on Selena’s new figure and her “ill-fitting” bikini.

Because, you see, she’s “fat.”

There’s no denying that she’s carrying extra weight, but “fat” she is not, at least not by our everyday, real-life standards. Let’s not forget, the “average” size in the US and UK is twice as big as Selena today, when she is labeled “fat.”

Selena is watching, reading the negative comments

Not that she cares that much about being called names. Some hours after the first round of pics hit the net, sparking this conversation on her weight, Selena posted the photo below to her Instagram, captioning it, “I love being happy with me yall #theresmoretolove.”

That hashtag says it better than she could have in a limited number of characters: yes, she’s heavier but she’s happy and she doesn’t care what random strangers are saying about it online.

A couple of hours after the post, a new set of paparazzi pics emerged, this time of her in the one-piece swimming suit. She might not care about the haters, but the Internet got her to cover up, whether that was the haters’ intention or not.

As we speak, other voices are getting louder, praising her for standing up for curves and preaching body acceptance.
