Sega has announced an upcoming entry in the Yakuza series, titled Yakuza 0, set to function as a prequel to the events in the original Yakuza game.

Yakuza 0 has its action set in December 1988, taking place in Kamurocho, Tokyo, and Soutenbori, Osaka, according to the article in Japanese video game magazine Famitsu, as translated by Gematsu.

As the upcoming game is directly connected to the first entry in the Yakuza series, many characters and locales from the original will make an appearance.

The game's main stars will be Kazuma Kiryu and Majima Goro, 20 and 24 years old, respectively. Kiryu is reported to be a bill collector for the Tojo Clan's Dojima Family, and Goro is employed as a cabaret club manager.

The game is currently in development for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 platforms from Sony, and for the time being there is no word on whether the title will make it over to the West.

Sega has promised fans that more will be shown during the upcoming Tokyo Game Show in September.

The Yakuza series is the closest equivalent to a Japanese Grand Theft Auto action adventure video game. For the time being, western fans of the franchise are waiting for Sega to bring Yakuza 5 and Yakuza: Restoration to their shores.
