Our friends from Vulnerability Lab participated at this year’s Campus Party in Berlin and they were kind enough to tell us a few things about the security section of the event.

Campus Party is an annual event where thousands of hackers, gamers and developers gather for non-stop partying, geek-style that is.

This year, the 24-hour hackathon was sponsored by O2, Telefonica from Italy, and Blue Butterfly - a start-up that focuses its efforts on making wireless connectivity “easier than ever.”

Since they were the main sponsors and since much of their work is about near-field communications (NFC), the goal of the hackathon was to create a mobile app that utilized Blue Butterfly’s API and NFC.

The winners – a couple of developers from Spain - got a free SDK start-up license worth around $10,000 (8,000 EUR). Their app was designed to manage application resources.

The runner-up – Hopkins from London (see picture) – won $1,400 (1,100 EUR) and a retina-enabled Apple notebook. The second runner-up got a Google Nexus and $800 (640 EUR).

“My team produced an application which displays our mobile bug feed with some options and is using NFC to direct people to the specific feed. We got invited to the finals in London to present our code and functions at the Telefonica conference in October,” Benjamin Kunz Mejri, the founder and CEO of Vulnerability Lab, told us.

“We did not participated in the contest directly because we came too late to the registration, but we were invited to the conference in October after they saw our code and idea,” the security expert added.

John Draper, also known as Captain Crunch, was also present at the event and held a great talk on the topic of “History of phone phreaking and discoveries.”

“It was one of the best talks at the conference and everybody was happy and inspired by him,” he concluded.

Here is the video of John Draper’s talk:
