Police overreacts at possible threat

A site's content has alarmed US policemen that took immediate measures, just in case the news was true. The site, debka.com, stated that there is soon going to be a terrorist attack in either Miami, New York or perhaps Los Angeles. They were also giving information about how the attack was going to be like - they've said that there was going to be a truck full of radioactive material that terrorists were planning to detonate.

On debka.com was also mentioned that Qaeda members are going to be part of this, which made things look really serious. The Police also treated this possible threat with maximum caution, as the site is said to have - as Police spokesman Brown stated for The New York Times - Israeli intelligence and military sources.

The Internet is clearly not the most reliable source there is, but the Police didn't want to risk anything, so their tried to keep security tight, deploying a lot of units on the highways. They had sent many people with lots of radiation detection equipment, several vehicles and helicopters, as well as small ships, all equipped with radiologic sensors. The Police units that were sent in this operation were stationed around several checkpoints that were installed at Manhattan entries, one at Bowery and one at Canal street.

Such NYPD actions are considered to be normal, said NY mayor Bloomberg to the NY Times; precaution is one of the most important things when trying to build up security against terrorists. Security expert Bruce Schneier said on his blog that it all sounded like a hoax to him and he gently criticized the Police's actions. They were based - as their spokesman said - on the fact that the site carried reports that are often wrong but occasionally right, so that's when Schneier begged to differ, asking what US terrorist act did the site predict.
