Intego, the security firm that originally documented the Mac Defender trojan lately targeting Mac, has announced a new software product. This one does backups, which also falls under security.

Backup Express is described by Intego as a powerful backup and synchronization tool.

“Backup Express goes beyond your Mac's built-in backup capability, allowing you to back up your valuable files to external hard drives, DVDs, network volumes and more,” the developer states.

It’s available exclusively from the Mac App Store and backs up files to every type of media while synchronizing selected folders or volumes across Macs.

Users can create backup scripts and set schedules to run backups automatically, in the background.

Backups can be set as incremental and users can exclude files that they don’t store, as well as keep multiple versions of those files that are backed up.

Finally, users can sync folders or volumes between any two Macintosh computers.   Backup Express supports the following volumes, Intego said: partitions or volumes on your hard drive; external hard drives; removable media, such as USB key drives; CDs or DVDs; network volumes; AirPort disks (hard disks connected to Apple's AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule base station); MobileMe iDisk (available with Apple's MobileMe service though not for long as MobileMe is getting replaced by iCloud); an iPod; and disk images.

The software has other noteworthy features as well, like the ability to drag and drop backups, automatic mount and dismount network volumes, and the option to immediately recover data copied in its original format.

Backup Express is localized in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish and costs $14.99. The software is currently available at a special introductory price of just $9.99.   Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard is required to run the app. You also need an Apple ID to download this Mac App Store-exclusive app.
