SecureMac has released its first app in Apple’s Mac App Store — PrivacyScan. The software provides protection by scanning your Mac for files that could compromise your privacy.

PrivacyScan has been designed to offers multiple layers shredding, which means your tracks will be erased securely. You can use it to destroy files that can be used to track your whereabouts, such as web browser cache files, browsing history, cookies, flash cookies and temporary files.

The app also cleans your Mac and saves hard disk space.

According to the developers, “the secure shredding offered within PrivacyScan goes above and beyond United States Department of Defense (DoD) deletion standards by overwriting files with up to 35 passes to ensure complete deletion of sensitive data.”

One of the key features touted by SecureMac is the program’s ability to customize apps on an individual basis to delete specific threats. By default, PrivacyScan will clean privacy threats by removing them from your system.

You can then use the Scan procedure to choose what to investigate within your selected apps.

SecureMac's President, Nicholas Raba, recalls a recent experience:

"Over the holidays, all of the relatives were in town. The little kids ended up sneaking onto the computer and looking up the purchase history from all of the recent online shopping, and managed to ruin the surprise by finding out what all of the presents were before they even opened them! PrivacyScan can help you avoid situations like this."

PrivacyScan 1.0 is available at an introductory price of $4.99 USD (3.99 EUR or equivalent amount in other currencies) and can be downloaded from the Mac App Store’s Utilities category. It requires Mac OS X 10.6.6, and works with OS X 10.7 Lion as well.
