With a 3rd party security application

People who are frequently using their Bluetooth connections to exchange files or to simply play games with their friends have a high chance of being hack attacked. Some Symbian devices have been gifted with special protection applications that will reduce this chance of unwanted intrusion, but most aren't. SymbianGuru came up with a simple-to-use security application that promises to save your phone from Bluetooth attacks or unwanted Bluetooth connection requests. BT Guard is now compatible with any Symbian S60 mobile phone, including 5th Edition devices such as Nokia N97 and Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.

The application can be installed either on your phone memory or on your memory card to save some storage space, though it only takes around 350KB. The .sis file can be transferred on the phone through Internet, IrDA, Bluetooth connections or Nokia PC Suite synchronization. After installing it you can start it by clicking on the icon, which will take you directly to the main page of the security software. There are no supplementary settings except for those that are available on the main page of the application.

Basically, BT Guard changes the status of your Bluetooth connection in accordance with the settings you make. Whether you're a frequent user or a much softer one, the application offers you the option to make the changes that closely fit your usage profile. If you use your Bluetooth connection for no more than 5-10 minutes per day, especially for exchanging short files, then you might want to set BT Guard to put your Bluetooth connection offline after 5 minutes since it became active. But if you use it as a car-kit, you will probably need to set it for higher periods, such as 30 minutes or more. The second important option that you can set is the possibility to turn the connection to Invisible mode, which means that you can do all the things you could if it was set as active, except for receiving files. This way your phone won't be visible for potential unwanted connection requests. The last setting, Ask, will invite you to opt when you're asked about the next status change of the Bluetooth connection.
The trial version of BT Guard is fully functional for 10 days, after which you'll be invited to register the program. The product can be acquired for $9.99 USD directly from the developer's website.
