StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, the sequel to the original 1998 video game by Blizzard Entertainment, is coming on July 27 for Mac OS X, the creators of the game have confirmed. Developed for concurrent release on Windows and Mac OS X, StarCraft II is split into three installments: the base game with the subtitle Wings of Liberty, expansion pack Heart of the Swarm, and expansion pack Legacy of the Void.

Fans of the franchise should well be aware that StarCraft II is set in the 26th century in a distant part of our galaxy, revolving around three species: the Terrans (human exiles from Earth), the Zerg (a race of insectoid genetic assimilators), and the Protoss (a species with vast psionic power). While Wings of Liberty has a specific focus on the Terrans, the expansions Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void have a distinct focus on the Zerg and Protoss.

Mac RTS fans can immediately secure their copy of Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty via Amazon.com, where the game is priced at $59.99 and listed as “in stock.” A number of product features is offered, as listed below:

- Fast-paced, hard-hitting, tightly balanced competitive real-time strategy gameplay that recaptures and improves on the original game - Three completely distinct races: Protoss, Terran, and Zerg - Units and gameplay mechanics distinguish each race - 3D-graphics engine with support for visual effects and massive unit and army sizes - Full multiplayer support, with competitive features and matchmaking utilities available through Battle.net

As revealed by Blizzard Entertainment earlier this week, Mac gamers will need to pack at least Mac OS X 10.5.8 and an Intel Processor to play the game, with a GeForce 8600M GT graphics solution (or equivalent), 2GB of RAM, 12 GB of HDD space, a broadband Internet connection and 1024X720 minimum display resolution. Recommended specs include an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4 GB of memory and an NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT or ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics card.
