The Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin was not at the Grammy Awards 2011 even though she was honored with a special all-star tribute. She did appear in the broadcast with a live message – and thus unveiled she’d lost a lot of weight.

In December last year, the singer was admitted to the hospital, where she underwent surgery for an ailment that she still refuses to speak of.

When she appeared on the giant screen at the Grammys looking considerably slimmer, talk of the reason for her stay in the hospital began again.

Some said she probably had her stomach stapled to help her lose weight; others believed her health had deteriorated so much that it caused her to drop the extra pounds.

In a recent phone interview cited by The Portland Press Herald, the diva reveals that her secret is the traditional, age-old combination of dieting and working out.

Franklin admits that she has lost a lot of weight and says that she doesn’t plan on stopping here either, because she’s determined to overhaul her lifestyle completely.

“I want to not only maintain the weight I am at now, but better it, by one dress size,” she says. So, she’s eating right and she’s getting regular exercise.

“Since her surgery, Franklin has been working out and walking on a track three times a week,” TPPH writes.

“But she said her biggest health change has been in her diet: She’s given up her beloved chitterlings, pigs’ feet and ham hocks in favor of a whole foods-type diet, and she hopes to get down to a size 16,” the publication further reports.

Back when she was in hospital recovering from the surgical intervention, word online had it that her weight also had something to do with the reason she was there in the first place, so this probably explains why the singer is now so committed to losing weight.
