Second Beta of Linux Mint 3.0 Available Now

Second beta of Cassandra is out!

Clement Lefebvre announced today, just as I am writing this, the second beta release of the upcoming Linux Mint 3.0 (codename "Cassandra"). Most of the known bugs reported by the users, on the Linux Mint forum, have been fixed and the mintMenu and mintInstall applications are now stable. You should notice some new artwork, but the mintArt team is still working very hard for an improved look and feel of the final release. I was very happy to find out that this is the first distribution to include the brand new Pidgin 2.0.0, which replaces Gaim (of course). Clement also says that Sunbird software might be added in the final release.

Highlights of this second beta release include:

￭ Gnome 2.18 (speed improvements)
￭ Kernel 2.6.20 (better hardware support)
￭ Ubuntu Feisty innovations (restricted-manager, desktop-effects, windows migration assistant, avahi)
￭ OpenOffice 2.2 (complete suite)
￭ Thunderbird replaces Evolution as the default

email reader
￭ the Gimp is installed by default
￭ Gnome-control-center replaces mintConfig as the default control center application
￭ Both mintDisk (for internal drives) and NTFS-Config (for external drives) are present for NTFS support
￭ Support for Gnome Templates in mintDesktop
￭ mintInstall replaces gnome-app-install
￭ Drag & Drop support in mintMenu with many other improvements
￭ Sun Java 6 replaces Sun Java 5
￭ Compiz, Beryl and Emerald installed by default

There is no exact date scheduled for the final version of Linux Mint 3.0, but Clement Lefebvre says it will be available somewhere during the next week. Please test this second beta release as much as you can; especially the mintInstall and its Software portal: http://www.linuxmint.com/software
