Seas0nPass 0.8.4 has been released adding tethered jailbreak support for Apple TV software version 5.0.1 (iOS 5.1.1) build 9B206f for second-generation models. “ATV3 update still in progress,” says fireCore.

fireCore, the firm responsible for the aTV Flash tool enhancing Apple TVs everywhere, has released an updated version of the Seas0nPass jailbreak tool which currently provides tethered support for all owners of a second-generation (720p) Apple TV set-top box.

“Seas0nPass currently supports a TETHERED jailbreak of the 2nd gen Apple TV running the latest 5.0.1 (iOS 5.1.1 - 9B206f) software that was released on May 10th, 2012,” reads a note on the fireCore site.

The company offers support for older Apple TV versions if the customer has saved firmware signatures. “The 3rd gen Apple TV is not yet supported,” reports fireCore. Development is ongoing, but there has been little to no progress lately.

Apple TV 5.0.1 build 9B206f comes with enhancements to iTunes previews, AirPlay, Home Sharing, Netflix, as well as a number of stability improvements. It applies to both Apple TV second-generation and Apple TV third-generation devices, with 1080p capabilities.

From Apple’s official release notes:

iTunes previews - Previews for movies and TV shows from the iTunes Store can now be viewed in HD.

AirPlay - Fixes an issue that caused some iOS apps to have trouble connecting via AirPlay. Home Sharing - Improves the reliability of Home Sharing connections. Netflix - Addresses an issue affecting Netflix login and navigation. Stability and performance - Includes fixes for issues affecting stability and performance.

Some Apple TV software versions jailbroken with Seas0nPass will require a tethered boot, which means the set-top box must be connected to a computer for a brief moment during startup.

For the tethered boot process to work properly, the Apple TV must be disconnected from the computer for a brief moment after restoring in iTunes.

Note that jailbreaking is a practice not condoned by Apple.
