Seagate to roll out new 6Gbps Barracuda XT hard drive

Seagate, one of the world's leading vendors of traditional hard disk drives and other storage solutions, is expected to announce a new high-capacity hard drive that will provide customers with a massive 2TB of storage. Coming in a desktop-ready 3.5-inch form factor, said drive is expected to be one of the first to boast a 6Gbps connectivity interface, consequently providing users with increased speeds and performances, which makes it an ideal choice for some of the upcoming high-end computer systems. Dubbed
Barracuda XT, the new drive is expected to be announced soon.

 

According to available details, that have recently surfaced on PC Magazine, the new drive has been designed for high-end computer systems and will be featured with four 500GB platters, with a spinning performances of 7200RPM. The drive is expected to come with 64MB of cache and use the next-generation SATA interface, providing users with a speed of 6Gbps. Additional features of the new drive include a maximum sustained data rate of 138MB/s, while power consumption will be at 9.23 watts on average and up to 2.9 bels in acoustic power while seeking.

 

The drive is said to go on sale in North America for US$299, providing users with a new storage alternative for their high-performance desktop computer systems. The company could also announce other solutions based on the new Barracuda XT drive, including some new external storage solutions that will enable users to expand the storage of their desktop or portable system in a more convenient way.

 

Seagate's new Barracuda XT drive offers the potential of increased performance, thanks to the adoption of the new SATA interface, but for users to take full advantage of its specifications, motherboard and PC makers are yet to roll out a full lineup of new solutions that support the standard.
