Seagate just announced that the company has developed a news series of super-slim hard drives that measure only 7mm in height and are specially designed to be used inside tablets and other ultra-portable computing devices.

The new hard drives were introduced into the Momentus Thin product line, are available in three versions with either 160GB, 250GB or 320GB of storage space, and include 16MB of cache memory.

Their spindle speed is set at either 5400RPM or 7200RPM, so performance should be on par with that of regular 2.5-inch notebook HDDs and Seagate also offers optional hardware data encryption certified with the FIPS 140-2 standard.

Together with the announcement of the Momentus Thin product line, Archos has also launched the G9 series of tablets that is built using these hard drives, with prices starting at $279 for the 8-inch model.

“Seagate continues to break new ground in the development of products and technologies that matter most to customers by delivering the Momentus Thin drive for these powerful Archos tablets,” said Rocky Pimentel, Seagate Chief Sales and Marketing Officer.

“The Momentus Thin drive gives tablet buyers a compelling option, providing great storage capacity and performance that dovetail with the processing power of the new Archos products for great Android and multimedia experiences,” concluded the company's rep.

In another move into the tablet computing market, Seagate last month announced the GoFlex Satellite mobile wireless storage device, the first battery-powered external hard drive to wirelessly extend the storage capacity of any Wi-Fi enabled mobile device including tablets.

With 500GB and Wi-Fi access over 802.11 b/g/n and a rechargeable battery, the GoFlex Satellite device enables users of tablets and other ultra-portable devices to carry with them a wide variety of video, music, pictures and documents.
