Seagate Technologies launches 10 new hard drives, one of them employing the new perpendicular writing technology.
The internal hard-disks that have been presented these days include many world firsts: one that is designed for automobiles, an 8GB and 1 inch solution and
another aimed at multimedia players. Seagate also attacks the home entertainment segment with a 500GB drive which is able to store 85 hours of high-definition video content.
Still, the most important novelty is the use of the perpendicular technology implemented in a 2.5 inch, 160GB hard drive. Initially designed for mobile systems, Seagate wants now to change the drive so that it can be used in other types of devices.
These new drives will be available starting with this summer, and the company intends to implement the perpendicular writing technology to a significant number of products; 70 to 80% percents of the new products will switch to it. Besides the technical advantages associated with this new technology, there are also important financial aspects: the cost of the storage space will decrease from 75 cents per GB to 65 cents per GB.
