Scotts Valley, California-based Seagate, one of the world's largest vendors of computer and professional storage solutions, has recently announced the introduction of its latest SV35.5 series of hard drives, designed specifically to meet the performance and storage requirements of digital video surveillance systems. According to the company, these new hard drives have been built to provide the necessary support and performance for 24x7 usage, making SDVR integration easy. According to Seagate, the features included in the new SV35.5 series make these products an ideal solution for the demands of the video surveillance market.

“The hardware requirements for the surveillance market are especially critical and dictate the use of HDDs that are made specifically for the needs of video system manufacturers and integrators,” said Carla Kennedy, senior vice president of Seagate's Enterprise Product Line Management group. “With its optimized performance and capacity that can store over one full month of high-resolution video, the Seagate SV35.5 Series hard drive is a prime example of Seagate delivering a feature-rich solution that customers have requested.”

The new SV35.5 hard drives are available in capacities of 250GB, 500GB and 1TB, featuring a spin speed of 7200RPM and a SATA 3Gbps interface. According to the specifications of the drives, the SV35.5 can provide sustained sequential data rates of 140MB/s with a maximum of 7 watts of power usage in performance idle, for 500GB and 1TB models (5 watts for 250GB drives). The 250GB drives boast 8MB of cache, while the 500GB and the 1TB models come with a cache size of 32MB. The drives come with a limited 5-year warranty and have typical acoustics specifications of 2.5 bels.

“While we continue to use the Barracuda(R) ES series for our enterprise class RAID solutions, the Seagate SV35 series is a perfect solution for our very successful series of non-RAID DVRs,” said Pelco Product Marketing Manager Yvonne Schwemmer. “The fact that Seagate has engineered these drives for the video surveillance market gives us increased confidence in the products we deliver to a demanding marketplace.”

Unfortunately, Seagate hasn't unveiled any details regarding the pricing and availability of the new SV35.5.
