While there have been a high number of products touted as the “world' [superlative]” by their creators, some of them actually stand out from the crowd through their genuine set of innovative and advanced features. Seagate seems to aim for such an impression by announcing the availability of its Savvio 10K.4 enterprise hard disk drive. Meant to enable very high data densities for external storage arrays, the HDD seeks to stun end-users through its high reliability rating and high storage capacity.

The Savvio 10K.4 has a capacity of 600GB. Indeed, considering that the drive uses the 2.5-inch form factor, this is genuinely an impressive feat. The device is built with PowerChoice, for improved power savings when idle, the Protection Information technology, which enhances protection of data-in-flight, and a self-encrypting drive (SED) option for protecting data-at-rest.

These combined features enable a greater overall value and can reduce the cost of ownership. Of course, the product's appeal stems from more than just the advantages of the 2.5-inch form factor over the 3.5-inch one. What is especially noteworthy about Seagate's device is the very high reliability rating, with an MTBF (mean time before failure) of no less than two million hours.

“Our customers face challenging storage needs requiring the most efficient use of space and power while maintaining the highest performance possible,” Howard Shoobe, senior manager, Dell Storage Product Management, said. “The new 2.5-inch 10K-rpm 600GB capacity point allows a doubling of capacity within the same rack space of current 3.5-inch 15K 600GB drives while increasing overall system-level performance and decreasing power usage.”

“A transition to 2.5-inch enterprise-class HDDs by server and storage system OEMs is building momentum,” John Rydning, IDC’s research director for hard disk drives, added. “There continues to be nearly insatiable demand for digital content accessed via numerous applications and devices, content that is increasingly delivered from storage systems equipped with high capacity enterprise-class HDDs such as Seagate’s Savvio® 10K.4.”

The drive is already listed online at the price of $668.72. More information may be found on the official product page.
