As far as storage is concerned, Solid State Drives are expected to impact the market in a very significant way. And it seems that this is what all storage manufacturers are concerned about these days, according to all the recent news. With all that, Seagate comes to counter this trend - by announcing today the release of three new hard drives.

The company unveiled today the industry's first 1.5 terabyte desktop and half-terabyte notebook hard drives designed to meet the explosive worldwide demand for digital-content
storage. Seagate's new hard drives have been built to accommodate the storage requirements of both desktop and portable computer system users.

The Barracuda 7200.11 hard drive has been designed to sport a whooping 1.5TB of storage space in a 3.5-inch form factor, ideal for desktop computer systems. The new drive raises the bar for the world's highest capacity hard drive by no less than 500GB. The drive comes with a SATA 3Gb/s interface and delivers an industry-leading sustained data rate of 120MB/s. This product is also offered in 1TB, 640GB, 500GB, 320GB and 160GB variants, with cache options of 32MB and 16MB.

For the mobile market, the company's 2.5-inch Momentus hard drives will be offered in two different flavors. The Momentus 5400.6 and Momentus 7200.4 will provide a maximum platter speed of 5400 RPM and 7200 RPM, respectively. Both Momentus drives are built with a SATA 3Gb/s interface and can withstand up to 1000Gs of non-operating shock and 350 Gs of operating shock to protect drive data. The Momentus 5400.6 comes with capacities that range from 120GB to 500GB, and 8MB of cache. The 7200RPM version is power-efficient and comes in capacities ranging from 250GB to 500GB, with 16MB cache.

"Organizations and consumers of all kinds worldwide continue to create, share and consume digital content at levels never before seen, giving rise to new markets, new applications and demand for desktop and notebook computers with unprecedented storage capacity, performance and reliability," said Michael Wingert, Seagate executive vice president and general manager, Personal Compute Business. "Seagate is committed to powering the next generation of computing today with the planet's fastest, highest-capacity and most reliable storage solutions." he concluded by saying.
