Seagate Lowers Warranty Time from Five to Three Years

Seagate lowers warranty period from five to three years

Seagate, the leading provider of storage solutions, has recently announced that it would change its limited warranty terms for specific drives starting with January 3rd, 2009. According to the company's announcement, some of its products series like consumer electronics (Seagate Barracuda 7200 included), notebook (Momentus 7200 and Momentus 5400 included) and personal storage bare drives will have their warranty period shortened from five to three years.

As the company states, the decision to reduce the warranty period was taken after a close analysis of the returns from consumers. Seagate says that 95 percent of those returns take place within the first three years of the warranty period, which means that reducing it won't affect in any way its relationship with users. The firm has announced that the new limited warranty time is in line with the rest of the industry, while also covering the needs of its partners and consumers.

The fresh Seagate three-year limited warranty will apply only to some of its products and, obviously, to those shipped after January 3rd, 2009. Moreover, the storage solution provider was very clear on the fact that customers who had already purchased a Seagate product would benefit from the warranty in place at the time of purchase.

The company has said that the changes in the warranty period are complemented by terms that should be more suitable to customers. According to the maker, the new terms are supposed to be “in line with industry standard warranty offerings, and that better align to the requirements of our partners and customers”. The warranties of enterprise storage or retail products at this time are not previsioned to see other changes, states Seagate.

Is this 3-year an unconditional warranty?
or is this like a tread-wear warranty where I get (guessing) 100% back in year1, 50% back in year2, 25% back in year3.
I read the Seagate site and the warranty terms were not evident

Maybe 95% within 3 years WAS the error return rate they previously saw, but now they are lowering their standards, and their testing will now be letting inferior products ship because they won't worry about five years hence. In a highly competetive market you have to be better than your competition, not just average. They are lowering the bar, something you shouldn't do in these times. I guess I'll be rethinking WD for my HD needs. Too bad, I really think their products at Seagate are decent fair. And that's a LOT of purchasing power, potentially changing sides.
A few years ago, companies we tightening up their return policies, but not today, consumers have a choice, something BOD members need to remember.

I think the warranty period is enough, for 3 years I will need a new HD

What a disappointing move by Seagate. They can spin it however they want, but the bottom line is they are trying to save some money and the enduser is paying for it. If they are so few drive failures from years 3-5 then why not keep the 5 year warranty as a sign of confidence in their product? Yeah right.

The 5 year warranty was one of the most attractive features about Seagate drives, and my company has been purshasing Seagate drives exclusively (at often a higher price). This now puts Western Digital, and others back in play for us.
