Seagate Technology announced the launch of its latest hard disk drive which is intended to be used as a high performance storage solution in an enterprise or corporate environment. The Cheetah 15K.6 hard disk drive is the latest addition to the hugely successful enterprise Cheetah family of products that are specifically built for the most demanding and intensive applications that are running on enterprise servers.

Coming in the normal form factor of 3.5 inch, the new
Cheetah hard disk drive is the world's most performance oriented drive ever packed in such a small enclosure and it brings a net increase in sustained data transfer rates of more than 28 percent over the previous generations. As hard disk drives are getting smaller or maintaining their form factor unchanged, new technology is employed in order to increase the data storage capabilities of the devices and Seagate used the second generation perpendicular recording technology to build the latest line of Cheetah drives which come with capacities ranging from 147Gb to 450GB. As the storage capabilities of the latest Cheetah drives are exceeding those of the competing drives, the new Seagate line of products is offering an excellent blend of performance and data storage capacity.

From an enterprise class hard disk drive like the new Seagate Cheetah 15K.6 drive a certain degree of reliability is expected and the Seagate delivers in full with its 1.6 million hours MTBF (mean time between failures), 0.55 percent AFR and a choice between Serial Attached SCSI (SAS for short) or Fibre Channel (FC) interfaces as well as a five year warranty. "With the Cheetah 15K.6's combination of high performance, capacity, and optimized power utilization, it is ideal for demanding transactional and energy-constrained data center environments," said Sherman Black, Seagate senior vice president and general manager, Enterprise Compute Business. "As enterprises continue to grow in volume and scale, Seagate remains committed to delivering the industry's most trusted enterprise hard drives to fulfill these demanding needs."

The Seagate PowerTrim technology is included in the new Cheetah 15k.6 as a mean to optimize performance and reduce power consumption according to the drive workload level. When idle the Cheetah 15k.6 hard disk drive lowers its power requirements with as much as 61 percent for every GB of stored data while increasing at the same time the overall data transfer rate by 28 percent and reaching 164MB per second.
