Seagate is known to be one of the world's major suppliers of hard disk drives and has now added a new series of products to its enterprise-oriented portfolio, one dubbed Constellation.2 and already available for shipment to OEMs and distribution channels.

The new series of HDDs that Seagate came up with is currently comprised of three models, with capacities of 250 GB, 500 GB and 1 TB, respectively.

"Data center managers continue to seek out more efficient storage technologies without sacrificing performance, while still meeting capacity growth requirements," said John Rydning, research director for IDC.

"Reaching the 1TB capacity in a small form factor design gives IT managers more options to meet capacity requirements with efficient storage platforms. IDC expects the use of capacity-optimized drives like Seagate's 1TB Constellation.2 to increase by more than 50% from 2010 to 2014," he added.

All three of them use the 2.5-inch form factor and are designed with either the SATA 6.0 Gbps interface or the SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) 6.0 Gbps connectivity standard.

Their platter speed is of 7,200 RPM (rotations per minute), while the cache memory is of 64 MB.

Additionally, the newcomers have a MTBF of 1.4 million hours and a sound output of 2.8 bels during seeks.

Finally, they boast the Self Encrypting Drive (SED) option, for the necessary security level that all enterprise storage units are expected to possess.

“The Constellation.2 underscores Seagate’s commitment to its customers to deliver industry-leading solutions that meet the demands of IT professionals today and tomorrow,” said Carla Kennedy, vice president of Product Line Management, Seagate.

“With its class-leading reliability, record-breaking capacity, and improvements made along its entire range of features, Constellation.2 drive is a perfect solution for dense server and storage systems,” Kennedy added.

Systems equipped with either of the tree new Constellation.2 drives are expected to ship before the end of December.
