Seagate Technology may have been trying to become a private company but it has definitely not been slacking off in terms of product development and shipments, having now created some new Barracuda Green HDDs with the latest SATA interface.

Some time ago, Seagate announced that it was open to be acquired by other companies, but it seems that those plans have fallen apart.

Recently, the outfit said it was dropping plans to become private after it failed to get a suitable offer, even though it sold its 1.5 billionth drive not long ago.

In fact, the storage solutions supplier achieved that amount after selling 500 million HDD in the past two years alone.

Now, probably eager to reach the 2 billion HDD shipments mark as soon as possible, the world-class maker has created a new pair of Barracuda Green drives.

They go by the name of Barracuda Green 5900.3 and boast capacities of 1.5 TB and 2 TB, respectively.

As the 'Green' in the name implies, they focus more on power efficiency than on raw performance, though the latter cannot be said to be absent either.

In fact, as one would expect, the SATA 6.0 Gbps interface is their major asset and will let them read and write at much higher speeds than SATA 3.0 Gbps.

Such units are set to become more and more common now that the new and upcoming AMD and Intel platforms have incorporated it.

The other asset of the drives is the use of the Advanced Format Technology, which uses a sector size of 4 Kb.

Other specifications include a platter speed of 5,900 RPM (rotations per minute), a cache memory of 64 MB and the 3.5-inch form factor.

The newcomers are said to already be available for pre-order, with prices of $118.9 for the 1.5 TB model, and $149.99 for the 2 TB unit.
