Back in late November last year, Seagate, the world's leading vendor of hard disk drives, released a
firmware update for its Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB hard drives, which were reported to freeze for a few seconds, or report less than full capacity to the operating system. It now appears that the company continues to record issues with its latest drives, as it just released a new firmware for customers that have experienced issues with other Barracuda 7200.11 hard drives. However, despite the relatively good news for consumers, Seagate's issues with its latest hard disk drives will certainly leave a mark on the company, which is already feeling the effects of the low global demand.
In a recently released statement, the hard disk drive maker claims that it “has isolated a potential firmware issue in certain products, including some Barracuda 7200.11 hard drives and related drive families based on this product platform, manufactured through December 2008.” Seagate claims that the reported issue isn't associated with data loss and that if the consumer isn't able to access the data on his Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 hard drive, the company will provide free data recovery services. According to the HDD vendor, there are some circumstances under which the data on these hard drives may become inaccessible.
With the announcement, Seagate basically acknowledges that some of its hard drives have issues, despite the fact that they passed the qualification tests before being used by the end-user.
Customers have already expressed their feelings about the newest issues with Seagate's hard drives, some of them claiming that they are beginning to lose confidence in the company, despite the provided support. The reported issues certainly don't come as good news for the storage company, which has recently replaced both its CEO and COO and is expected to announce a 10% reduction of its U.S. workforce.
