Seagate, one of the leading manufacturers of computer storage products, has announced that Acer, top provider of notebook computers, is now offering new portable systems equipped with its own 500GB 2.5-inch Momentus 5400.6 hard drives.

The 500GB 2.5-inch HDDs were introduced back in July, along with the industry's first 1.5 TB desktop hard drive. Part of the company's lineup of Momentus HDDs, the 500GB model can deliver the perfect combination of capacity, speed and durability to meet the requirements of today's notebook users. Featured in Acer's Aspire and TravelMate PCs, the recently launched HDDs boast an areal density of 394GB per square inch, with a data transfer rate of 87 MB/s, the fastest available for a 5400RPM notebook drive.

“Acer mobile PC customers want notebooks that deliver state-of-the-art capabilities to meet their needs for capacity, performance and durability,” said Campbell Kan, vice president of the Mobile Computing Business Unit at Acer. “Seagate's new 500GB Momentus hard drive enables Acer to deliver the richest multimedia experience and on-the-go robustness available for notebook computers.”

Some of the features of these drives include a SATA interface, G-Force protection, free-fall sensor and Seagate's SoftSonic fluid-dynamic bearing motors, all of which have been designed to improve the reliability and performance of the HDDs. With a cache of 8MB, the drives are offered in capacities of 500GB, 320GB, 250GB, 160GB and 120GB.

“We are pleased that Acer is delivering cutting-edge mobile computers with 500GB notebook hard drives from Seagate, with more personal computer makers to follow," said BanSeng Teh, vice president and managing director, Seagate Asia Pacific. "Seagate continues to advance hard drive capacity, speed and durability, and our latest 500GB 2.5-inch drives and 1.5 Terabyte 3.5-inch drives provide the highest capacities on the planet to meet the growing need to create, store, share and protect digital content.”

In related news, Seagate's 1.5TB HDD has already been reviewed and it looks like the only thing that isn't quite so satisfactory about it is that you lose more than 100GB of storage space after you format it. Aside from that, given the approximate $190 price tag for the Seagate Barracuda and its overall storage capacity, it should prove to be a reliable solution for those that require high amounts of storage space.
