Notificon is a very very small JavaScript library for showing two-letter notifications on top of a site's favicon.

A unique concept indeed, which might not seem very helpful to many developers at first sight. On the other hand, if you pay more attention, you realize that favicons are shown in tabs as well, not only in the address bar, making this library a must-have when designing a site's UI and UX.

Notificon makes it possible for developers to update a tab's favicon in real time and re-catch a user's attention, even if he's navigating in another tab.

Just from the top of our heads we can see how useful this library can be for (e.g.) betting sites, streaming sports results, advertising, web app GUIs, download centers, file lockers, etc..

On the down side, the library can only overlay two characters at a maximum over a favicon, due to visibility problems. Also browser support is limited to Chrome 6+ and Firefox 2+ and Opera.

Notificon development can be followed via its GitHub account.
