'Impossible' features are depicted in the leaked screens

Last week, we reported that the first screenshots of Nike's upcoming application for iPhone 2.0 users had surfaced on the Internet. It didn't take long for the same sources who originally reported the story to learn that the alleged application screenshots were fakes.

AppleInsider reports that the screenshots, originally published on a French-based blog, "are believed to be the product of a third party or individual developer who conceptualized a semi-functional application for one reason or another". As you can see, not even the fact that they are fakes is a certainty. Still, the same source points out to the fact that Apple doesn't offer iPhone developers a programming interface for accessing the iPhone user's library. Therefore, it was a little strange to see that the screenshots depicted the capability of accessing music that "lives" on the Apple portables. It was then believed that the application was developed in conjunction with Apple. AppleInsider, however, could confirm this was not the case, noting that this "portion of the conceptual app is unlikely to function".

It was also rumored that the extended compatibility with Apple's devices would make good use of Wi-Fi and 3G (at least with the iPhone) for uploading training data "on the fly". The screens said that Nike + users would get all sorts of performance graphs right on their handset's screen. Users currently have to upload their data on the web to get these results.

Google Maps support was a nice surprise, nevertheless. Although not dismissed as a feature in the upcoming Nike + iPhone / iPod application, it is believed that Nike, Apple, or any other developer hired for the job still have a great deal of work ahead to finish the app, since no actual screens or ads have been officially released yet.

Nike + gear is aimed at athletes looking to optimize their workouts using graphs and recorded data which help them, and their trainers, track their progress more accurately.
