Thread on Apple Support Communities grows

A growing number of users are reporting scratched screens, with most claiming that their brand new iPhone 6 incurred dings and scratches just one or two days after the date of purchase.

Remember that one-of-the-nine site that aimed to create awareness about the #bendgate thing involving the iPhone 6 Plus? As it turned out, there were at least 600 bent units out there, but that’s still just a speck on Apple’s radar.

However, a new issue may be on the horizon, if this thread on Apple Support Communities is any indication. We’d like to assess the situation by asking affected users to send in their pictures.

Reports from the users

User qap wrote just a few days ago, “Same problem here :-( I've used the same or more care as the others iphones but this 6 has already a few scratches that you can see under some lighting conditions! I don't want to use screen protections and it doesn't fix the problem because a very little space between the protection and the end of the glass is exposed anyway!”

Opened on September 23, the topic has amassed 184,225 views and stretches across 64 pages. It’s not the only place on the web where this apparent issue is being discussed, but it’s the most relevant one.

Another customer writes: “Had an Iphone 3Gs for more than 4 years and it has one scratch due to a drop and nothing else. I take really good care of my 3 week old iphone 6, but in it's first week I found some some scratches on lower right corner. I even got a leather case from apple because I thought that was the problem but the scratches keep coming and I hate the ideia of putting a screen protector. I just hate them, that shouldn't be needed for a 700€ phone. No one I know that has a previous version of the iphone needed a screen protector.”

Not necessarily widespread

There’s a chance this issue doesn’t really exist, because if you think about it, of the 1,000 or so comments posted on that thread, only half of them are genuine new reports of scratched screens (the rest being just answers and chime-ins not necessarily by users with scratched displays).

Even more plausible is the fact that many of these people could be unaware that they’re not handling their phones properly.

We have a unit that we admittedly don’t take much care of, yet it doesn’t exhibit a single scratch on its display. And we can confirm that this phone has been crammed inside pockets next to keys, inside bags surrounded by dozens of metallic objects, and hasn’t worn a protective case. See our photos below. You be the judge.

Send in your photos

Apple is known to be using a durable, ion-strengthened glass to cover the display of the iPhone 6. However, if your device has incurred visible scratches for no apparent reason, we’d like you to send in some photographic evidence at [email protected].

When we rack up enough reports, we’ll feature your photos in a special article dedicated to #Scratchgate (which isn’t a thing yet, by the way).
