Scrap Vista and DirectX 10? Mac OS X the Next Gaming Platform!

Apple vs Microsoft...

Why does the association between Apple's Mac OS X operating system and the term gaming platform equal comedy? Well, the answer to this is rather simple. Mac OS X from the perspective of a gaming platform is simply a funny concept. There is no other way to describe it. Gaming has never been Mac OS X's top appealing aspect. By all means in fact, it is the one anodyne detail that is deterring gamers away from the Apple platform and onto Linux. But just for the fun of it... Do you want to know what would happen to a gamer that switched from Windows to Mac
OS X? Then simply watch the video fragment embedded at the bottom of this article. Long story short... he would no longer be a gamer.

According to estimated presented by Kevin Unangst, global director of Games for Windows, in excess of 200 million gamers around the world are using Windows as a main platform. Considering that, following the first 100 days of availability, Windows Vista has an installed base larger than any rival does, with just 40 million licenses sold, Mac OS X does not even come close to Windows. And in this context it isn't the platform itself; it is the game developers. Vista for example, has made its way to over 10 million gamers around the world looking to benefit from the DirectX 10 technology. It is a huge gambit to create a game for an operating system that struggles on the periphery of anonymity. There is simply no audience to target.

And while Microsoft announced at the E3 Media & Business Summit (E3) in Santa Monica on July 10, that approximately 30 titles will be released under the Games for Windows brand umbrella, with Xbox 360's bestseller "Gears of War" coming to both XP and Vista, Apple announced zero new games for Tiger and Leopard (scheduled for October). Well, in all fairness there's Warcraft III and that puzzle game with the Apple logo. It's funny because it's true. This situation is reflected by the market share of each operating system. Windows XP accounts for 81.94% of the market, Windows Vista for 4.52% and Mac OS X is at just 6%, according to data from Market Share by Net Applications.

I am a gamer and I switched to mac two years ago. I really missed games but I would never go back to Windows. So I got me a PS3. So I play games much easier on my PS3 and work on my macbook pro. Life is perfect.

Rubbish. I use a Mac for games, and there are heaps. Age of Mythology, Warcraft, Sims 2, Spore, Age of Empires (are you noticing a few Microsoft titles). Look at this website for heaps more: http://www.aspyr.com/product/search?title=&x=21&y=14&title_menu=&platform=1&genre=&esrb=. That's barely scraping the surface.
Besides, Apple uses OpenGL 2.1, arguably better than DirectX 10, and have you heard of CIder and Crossover? Worst comes to the worst, boot up Vista in Boot Camp and run the game at superfast speed using full DIrectX 10. Still think Macs are not a gaming platform?

HA HA HA! Great article, and funny video too... Even funnier because it's true. Lots of games for the mac indeed... from yesteryear! You see, the difference between fan-boys and actually informed people is that informed folks actually recognize the strengths AND weaknesses in two different things, whether they use them or not. The Mac is a beautiful machine for secure graphic and video editing, but it's locked-down architecture prevents serious developers from creating games on it without punishing themselves. Whomever thinks OpenGL is better than DirectX 7 upwards obviously doesn't use either, has probably never programmed, and knows not what they babble. I'm not even getting into the lack of proper 3D-dedicated hardware or graphics cards for macs, but I'll say this... When the Macintosh receives DirectX (or something analogous to it), then and only then will it see any greater gaming market share. I, for one am not switching to that platform until it does! I'd sooner take my chances with Linux... LOL!

Absolute nonsense. You don't know what you're talking about.

I don't care if you name is "developer", you are wrong. Which API is better for game development is, and will continue to be, a point of contention.

Of course, for 3d graphics work outside of games, OpenGL _destroys_ Direct3D.

There is no way Mac can compaire to a PC...

If you want to talk about software for the Mac... The most sold software for the Mac is the software that runs Windows on the Mac... and there it is geeks!!!

Perhaps the most obvious difference is that DirectX, as opposed to OpenGL, is more than just a graphics API. DirectX contains tools to deal with such components of a game as sound, music, input, networking, and multimedia. On the other hand, OpenGL is strictly a graphics API. so windows win with directx
