It is a surprisingly fast piece of technology, even among its own kind

There was a time when anything over 1 GB/s was considered very high speed, even on solid-state drives meant to communicate with a PC over the PCI Express interface. Mushkin wants to demolish that view though. The company has formally launched the Mushkin Scorpion Deluxe PCI Express SSD, which has a surprisingly low minimum capacity.

What we mean is that, while the two-end model does have 1,920 GB of storage space, the smallest one is a simple 240 GB drive.

It makes one wonder if it's worth sacrificing one of those PCI Express slots for it.

There are 480 GB and 960 GB drives covering the gap in between those two extremes.

Speaking of extremes, the sequential transfer speeds are definitely on the extreme side. It's not every day that you find a storage device capable of moving data at 2,100 MB/s.

Speaking of data speeds, the 4K random performance is of 100,000 IOPS. It all makes the drive a "natural for the digital effects arena."

"An insane amount of image data is required to produce motion picture visual effects," said VFX award-winning, Kelly Lee Myers, CG supervisor on Iron Sky.

"SSD storage devices like Muskin's Scorpion Deluxe PCIe provides artists with blazing-fast read and write speeds that reduce image editing and compositing tasks by several factors over and above spinning disc RAIDs. I count on Muskin hardware and will continue to do so in production."

Mushkin will start shipping the Scorpion Deluxe PCIe SSD around the middle of the month. The product pages, and sweepstakes information are where further coverage may be found.

"Mushkin's Pacific Rim sweepstakes definitely appeals to our audience on a variety of levels and provides our consumers with the chance to win some amazing prizes," said Nicolas Villalobos, director of global marketing at Mushkin, Inc.

"Alongside this campaign we are excited to launch our latest Scorpion Deluxe line of SSDs. Our customers can now manage data faster, safer and more efficiently. Whether for digital content creation, virtualization, database acceleration, motion picture visual effects or your own application, the Mushkin Scorpion Deluxe PCIe SSD is always ready."
