After 5 years as husband and wife, and one beautiful daughter together, Suri, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are taking the first steps to go their separate ways. A new report suggests that Katie filed for divorce because of Scientology.

Given Cruise's involvement in the church (check out the video below to see just how involved he was – it's an older clip that leaked online some years ago), it's no wonder it's considered the breaking point in their marriage.

In fact, TMZ says, it was the only thing that convinced Katie the relationship was beyond saving. She did not like Tom's plans about Suri, their 6-year-old daughter, so she decided she wanted out.

“Our sources say Katie has never been fully committed to Scientology, even though she has had ties with the church. We're told the couple had been arguing over Suri – that she's now of the age where Scientology becomes a significant part of her life,” TMZ reports.

She wanted Suri to have a normal childhood, as normal as it's possible for an offspring of superstars, who has even been named the most fashionable celebrity tot when she was just 3.

Oppositely, Tom wanted Suri to start with Scientology right away and to be raised according to the stipulations of the church.

This is also the reason why Katie is asking for sole custody: she wants Tom to be part of Suri's life, but not to the point where he can call the shots on everything.

“Sources familiar with the split tell us Katie is filing for sole legal custody specifically because she does not want Tom to control decisions relating to religion,” TMZ says.

In a separate report, the same media outlet notes that this is also the reason Katie chose to file for divorce all the way in New York, because the laws here don't allow two warring parents to make important decisions about their child's future, which means she stands better chances at getting sole custody.

“Sources have told us that the divorce is NOT about money – we're told Katie doesn't need Tom's money because she has plenty of it... and will be well taken care of under the terms of the prenup,” TMZ further notes.

Katie and Tom were married in an Italian castle in a fairytale ceremony 5 years ago. Over the past half a year, they have been spending increasingly more time apart, but it was assumed it was mostly because Tom was working more again, after having made his “comeback” in “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.”
