Selena Gomez has been working hard to make a name for herself as an actress but, though she’s had a few notable appearances in recent years, she isn’t exactly where she thought she’d be. Scientology plans to use her acting hopes to lure her in.

At least, that’s what this week’s print issue of Star magazine claims (story via CB). The Church of Scientology is constantly recruiting new members and, strictly from a PR point of view, Selena would be great if they landed her because she has a wholesome image and a very loyal fanbase that would do anything for her.

She’s also very popular and sells albums and concert tickets consistently, if not in record-breaking amounts.

As such, it’s probably true that Scientology is after her. As for the rest of the claims made by Star, that’s still to be seen: the tabloid writes that Giovanni Ribisi’s sister, Marisa, is “urging [Selena] to join the controversial religion.”

Because there’s nothing that Selena wants more right now than an acting career, this is what they’re promising her: contacts to make it happen.

“Marissa knows that Selena wants to be a big actress, so she reminds her how many stars are Scientologists,” says a spy.

Another insider adds that Gomez is actually in danger of falling into this trap because, she “is just so sweet and trusting: she isn’t that good at standing up for herself. If she does get sucked in, it’s hard to imagine her ever getting out.”

Scientology is constantly looking to get new members: the more high-profile they are, the better. After taking some PR hits in recent years, they’re in desperate need for a revamp. Selena would bring them unheard of amounts of media coverage and, of course, new members.

The report doesn’t mention whether she’s interested so, we might assume, her level of interest is entirely dependent on how badly she wants to succeed as an actress.
