Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are going through what could only be described as one of the most amicable divorces in showbiz, mostly because they're both thinking of what's best for their daughter, Suri. The Church of Scientology is clearly indifferent to that.

The Hollywood Reporter has spoken to various former members of the Church to find out what would happen to Katie as far as its leaders are concerned, now that she's chosen to file for divorce and, most likely, leave its ranks.

It is a known fact that Scientology doesn't look on those who defect with kind eyes, even making families cut off all contact when one member leaves.

The same would happen to Tom and Katie too, THR writes, if Tom weren't so high profile.

Under normal circumstances, he would be asked to stop all communication with both his ex-wife and his daughter because, in leaving, they became “suppressive persons.”

Fearing a PR crisis, no one will actually ask Cruise to do that because Scientology is getting enough bad press as it is, but that's not to say they don't have other means to take on Katie, the report says.

Samantha Domingo, daughter-in-law of Placido Domingo and former Scientologist (she's been with the Church for about 24 years) tells the publication that, as we speak, Scientologists are working overtime to “discredit” Katie.

“Katie would have been excommunicated normally, and behind the scenes she probably already is,” Mrs. Domingo says.

“Internally, the wheels are in motion to discredit Katie. We have moles that are pretending to be good Scientologists who report back to us on the outside. I’ve seen internal memos about Katie,” she explains, adding that “disconnection is the main weapon of Scientology.”

In this case, though, it can't be used because of Tom's public profile: the entire world would turn on the Church if they knew they'd asked the actor to cut all ties with his daughter.

“Katie Holmes is probably the biggest suppressive person out there right now. Tom, if he were an ordinary Scientologist, would be ordered to disconnect from Katie and because Suri will be living with Katie, he couldn’t see her either,” former Scientology spokesman Mike Rinder agrees.

“But because Tom is so high-profile, it would create a total furor if the public knew he was cutting Suri off. This is an example of the church at its most hypocritical,” Rinder adds.
