Scientists at the University of Minho in Portugal claim to have succeeded in using ground coffee to make booze.

Oddly enough, they say the beverage they have created has a high ethanol content and is surprisingly potent.

And yes, that's science talk for “boy, coffee-based booze can sure mess with a person's brains.”

The Week reports that, in order to make this beverage, the scientists first got some coffee grounds from a local roasting company.

Later, they boiled this raw material and collected the resulting liquid, in which they added sugar and yeast cells.

The concoction was left to ferment, after which it was distilled.

The same source informs us that, although the beverage's caffeine content is fairly low, it still smells like coffee. The newly-created spirit's taste has been described as bitter.
