Life Scientists owning an iPhone or iPod touch can now access protocols at the bench on their devices using the Promega app, available for free download through the App Store. This virtual Promega Protocols and Applications Guide provides information that is useful and applicable to scientists whether or not they are using Promega products, according to Promega Corp.

As the makers (leaders in providing solutions and technical support to the life sciences industry) indicate, the Protocols and Applications Guide has served as a general reference tool for scientists since 1989. An online version has been available since 2004 proving to be a truly important resource for scientists worldwide.

However, in these times, some of the most popular topics are PCR Applications, DNA Purification, Protein Expression, and Cloning. A big number of chapters are being downloaded online. With the Promega iPhone app, users can check out everything from step-by-step protocols, illustrations and example data, to extensive background information, animated movies demonstrating key techniques and cellular events and regular content updates right on their devices, the company says. Additionally, users are also provided with links to citations and other useful laboratory tools.

“The Protocols and Applications Guide provides a gateway to a whole world of information for scientists,” says Promega Corp. “Here you will find quick access to technical tips, example data, experimental protocols and multimedia presentations covering most common laboratory procedures. Routine molecular, cell biology and protein analysis procedures are covered extensively, with illustrations, example protocols and links to further reading,” reads the iTunes description.

Promega explains that the app, compatible with iPhone and iPod touch devices running OS 2.2, is divided into chapters. Each chapter covers a key technique or research area, and begins with an overview of the topic, followed by detailed protocol information and links to further resources. Topics covered range from basic amplification techniques to real-time PCR, and from simple cell-based assays to complex imaging techniques, according to Promega.
