The Rhone Glacier is one of the oldest blocks of ice in the Alps. It is also the source of the Rhone River, which flows through the center of the Swiss Alps.

Unfortunately, it might not be around for much longer, all thanks to global warming.

Scientists say that the Rhone Glacier, which by the way is believed to be more than 11,500 years old, has been steadily shrinking over the past 150 years.

Its gradual melting is due to the fact that local average temperatures have been rising, and will most likely continue to do so, sources say.

In an attempt to protect this massive block of ice, scientists have taken up the habit of covering it with blankets each and every summer.

The blankets, pictured above, are expected to keep the sun rays from hitting the glacier and slow down its melting rate.
