Scientific Linux 5.8 Is Based on RHEL 5.8

Pat Riehecky proudly announced last night, April 24th, the immediate availability for download of the Scientific Linux 5.8 operating system.

Scientific Linux 5.8 is now based on the code from Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.8 and it brings upstream features, as well as internal changes and improvements.

It is now powered by Linux kernel 2.6.18, and includes updated packages like ipw2100-firmware, Sun Java 1.6.0, OpenAFS, Anaconda installer, Apache, GDM, and much more.

"We would like to announce the immediate availability of Scientific Linux 5.8. We want to thank all those who have contributed helping us build and test this release. Finding bugs early has helped make this an excellent release." - was stated in the official announcement.

It has _always_ been powered by Linux kernel 2.6.18... for years and years.

I think, that it is too late for 5.8, CentOS already published 5.8 more than a month ago
