Urs Beyerle announced today the immediate availability of a new version of Scientific Linux Live CD/DVD edition. Compared with the previous version, Scientific Linux 5.2 Live CD/DVD works in persistent mode, which means that it will store/restore your settings if you run it from an USB flash drive. Also, this new feature will allow you to carry the USB stick with you, and boot from it whenever you need a stable and reliable operating system. Let's have a look now at the main features of Scientific Linux 5.2 Live CD/DVD:

■ Both Live CD and DVD versions can be installed on a local hard drive; ■ The Live CD will run from an USB flash drive; ■ The Live CD can be used as diskless client (mounted over NFS).

The following applications can be found in the Scientific Linux 5.2 Live CD/DVD:

■ Linux kernel 2.6.18-92.1.10.el5 ■ openAFS client 1.4.7 ■ X.Org 7.1 ■ 3D desktop with AIGLX and Compiz (Enable it from System -> Preferences -> Desktop Effects) ■ ALSA Sound Server 1.0.14 ■ GNOME 2.16.0 (Live CD's default desktop) ■ KDE 3.5.4 (available only on the Live DVD Edition) ■ Mozilla Firefox 3.0 ■ Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0 ■ The GIMP 2.2.13 ■ Evolution 2.12.3 ■ OpenOffice.org 2.3.0

The following applications were added in this Live CD/DVD, compared with the Standard Edition of the Scientific Linux:
