You see? When celebrities really want to keep a secret, they can. The only conditions they must fulfill to keep their private lives away from the ever prying eyes of the media are: number one, to want it really bad; and, number two, to make sure that whoever they confide in (family members and friends included) are trustworthy. Otherwise, the whole story gets into the tabloids and, eventually, they are forced to make some form of statement or another.
Case in point: Melanie Brown/Mel B/Scary Spice. Despite her ongoing custody and alimony battle against the father of her child, comedy actor Eddie Murphy, and the fact that not a single day goes by without her name holding the headlines, the singer still managed to find a way to get married to her current boyfriend, Stephen, during a secret ceremony held in Las Vegas on July 6. And we only got to hear about it yesterday... vaguely!
Yesterday, various gossip sites and magazines speculated that Melanie's long vacation in Miami with her current boyfriend might not be due only to being summer, but also to the fact that the two lovebirds had something more to celebrate - like, taking their relationship one step further, a theory that was also backed up by a clerk from a Vegas church, who claimed to have seen them together saying their vows. But it was her canceled appearance on 'Larry King Live' that really set those rumors sparkling!
When Melanie's representative was contacted by the media for an explanation for the 'Larry King' no-show, he said that both Mel and her daughter with Eddie Murphy, Iris Angel, were sick at home. Naturally, someone also asked him about the rumored Vegas quickie and, to everyone's surprise, he confirmed the suppositions. Here comes Mrs. Belafonte!
Although Brown and Belafonte have only been dating for a couple of weeks now, her publicist insists that they have known each other for more than that. Apparently, the two have been very good friends for years but, in recent months, 'that has developed into a loving relationship'. The good news is that they are, as the rep says, 'very happy'. When asked about the reason for all this secrecy surrounding their nuptials, the publicist stated that there was no 'secrecy' about it - the couple 'just value their privacy'.
