Andrew Lloyd Webber was pretty happy when the 21-year-old starlet accepted to play the leading part in the West End musical. So excited, in fact, that he made her do a live performance in front of an entire restaurant full o people to see just how well she can sing.
The music mogul approached her while she was dining and the young actress accepted immediately the offer. Webber says about their meeting:
'We had a hysterical night which ended in the early hours of the morning. We were at the top of the Peninsula Hotel and she sang in front of everyone, which was fantastic. She can really sing. I said to her, "Do you want to do Sound of Music?" She said yes'.
But the composer had a very unpleasant surprise the very next day, when he was contacted by Scarlett's people. According to him, they told him that such a big actress should not and would not appear in the West End for a meager $18,500 a week when she can easily cash in $10 million for a movie.
Webber stated that Scarlett was really into the project and had set her mind to being a part of it, but that now just became impossible because of the high demands coming from her managers.
Unsurprisingly, the other side has a total different version: 'It is true that there were some discussions regarding Scarlett and the production of the 'Sound of Music'. But Mr. Webber's statement regarding the demands is extremely exaggerated', a spokesperson for the actress said.
One thing is for sure: Scarlett Johansson won't be playing Maria in the renowned musical and will continue to stick to acting.
