The video that the entire world has been waiting for is finally out, but do not get your hopes up too high, because it's not going to offer answers to the questions that have been plaguing you so often during this past month or so. If you plan on watching the 'What Goes Around... ' video thinking that it will offer you an insight into Justin's personal life, you couldn't be more mistaken.
The point is that, ever since Justin and his long-term girlfriend Cameron Diaz have announced that they would be putting an end to their highly mediated romance, speculations began as to what might have caused the split. One good reason was considered to be the fact that Justin asked another famous actress to star in his video, instead of going to Cameron.
Rumors about a possible fling between that actress, namely Scarlett Johansson and JT, started to circulate as soon as she stepped on the set of the video and, truth be told, to this very day they haven't stopped. But we're not going to see that in the clip... far from it.
Although following the same pattern set by Jennifer Lopez, Jay Z and Enrique Iglesias (with all of them bringing their real life or soon to be partners to star in their videos as, naturally, their lovers), Justin's 'What Goes Around... ' is a bit different from what we've seen until now. The 9:20-minute clip distinguishes itself first and foremost by its cinematographic characteristic and only after that by its onscreen love story.
The moment the video was leaked on the Internet (its official release on MTV takes place today), the viewers were quick to comment on the fact that Justin could have done something better with his money. To that, I can't but subscribe. Recalling Michael Jackson's short movies, the video is far too long and far fetched, thus ruining (in some way or another) one of his best tracks from his second album.
Although it is all faint-colored and somehow recalling 'The Black Dahlia' movie, in which Scarlett recently starred, (the video was written by Nick Cassavetes - who also wrote 'Alpha Dog' and 'John Q'), the clip is far too short to be able to create that very world which it aimed to construe before our very eyes. It lacks substance and meaning, Justin and Scarlett's characters are shallow and not few are those who have already said that the beautiful actress could use a couple of acting lessons.
Truth is, maybe Justin should have stuck to something that he knew would work: great videos, with lots of dancing and sensual moves. The 'What Goes Around... ' clip is not half that bad, but maybe he should not mix movies and music. It's a recipe that rarely, if ever, works.
