Watch out if you mention the name of a celebrity on Twitter

In case you’re dreaming of appearing in the next music video of Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Robin Thicke, Adele, Rihanna, or other popular artists, you should beware of a scam that’s currently doing the rounds on Twitter.

I’ve seen several profiles that monitor Twitter for the names of various artists. When I tweeted earlier today about the Ariana Grande Facebook hack, one of them tweeted back to me promising a spot in her new hit video.

The spammy messages read something like this:

“Our Studio is trying out dancers for the new Ariana Grande music vid. Follow my photo to get details.”

“We are trying out extras for the new Jay-z hot single. For more info follow the image right here.”

“Spots Open For Music Extras For Miley Cyrus's New Track, View This Image 4 Details”

“Wanna try out for the upcoming Lady Gaga music vid? follow the directions in the photo here”

The tweets come with a picture that contains the following instructions: “Visit KPRStudio(dot)com. Fill out your info.”

KPR Studio appears to be a legitimate photography and design firm from North Carolina. However, their website has been hacked, since if you visit it you’re automatically redirected to 160tracker(dot)com, a website that hosts all sorts of scams.

Currently, KPRStudio(dot)com redirects to a broken link. However, that could change at any time. Considering that the spammy Twitter accounts have been active only for the past four days or so, it’s possible that the scammers are still working on tweaking their scheme.

It’s also worth noting that the spam accounts only send out around two dozen tweets each day, half of them being quotes from famous people.

I’ve reported some of the accounts for spam, but it’s likely that others might emerge soon.

Back in July, Symantec monitored a similar campaign. At the time, potential victims were urged to visit a link from the spam account’s profile description.
